The Unique Identification Authority of India was created to issue Aadhaar card. The UIDAI is composed of three posts DG, DDG and ADG. There are thirty five UID Commissioners at HQ of each state.
The regional offices are at Lucknow, Bangalore, Ranchi, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chandigarh Hyderabad and Guwahati. In the year 2009 additional posts were created raising the total number in the team to 383.
Th HQ is in New Delhi with a Chairman, Director General and Mission Director. As per plamming the DG is to be assisted by seven joint secretary level officers these will be Deputy Director Generals. After all the formalities are completed a temporary enrollment number is issued. Remeber the UID Card stores you demographic as well as biometric information. The application is verified centrally and the number imprinted on a laminated card is issued. This is then sent by registered post to your address.
In order to check the status of your Aadhaar application you need to visit the UIDAI website and go to the search tool. At the UID search tool you need to submit your temporary enrollment number and the date of application. This will fetch your application status online.

The scheme was launched on September 29/2010 at Tembhli, in Shahada, Nandurbar in the State of Maharashtra. The number has been allotted to more than 120 million Indian Citizens so far. Every month 20 million Aadhar number cards are being allotted all over the country.

Yes, this card is very necessary and useful too. India a large country should have details of every Indian individual and government will maintain records and benefit if requires by communities then can be passed easily to them.
Actually it is very big exercise, no country with huge population base in the world did so,I appreciate government of India for undertaking this job.
